Lesson 4
Personal Wizarding Spaces
Welcome to the last lesson!
In this lesson, we’ll discuss places as it appeals to an individual. Places in themselves are unique, same as the connection that we have to each one. Places have meanings to us. It might be the place where we felt the saddest, the happiest or maybe the best feeling we had in our lives. Places in themselves have connections to us; then how much interesting it would be if mixed with what we have, magic! So it would be the three of us, the place and magic. What a great combination it could be!
In this lesson, we’ll tackle the two people in the opposite lines in the story, Harry Potter and Tom Riddle and the places they grew up in. For Harry Potter, we have:
Tom Riddle or Lord Voldemort’s list includes:
As we can notice, the Burrow and Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes gave Harry great memories of having a sort of family where you can laugh and where they accept you for who you are. Godric’s Hollow provided Harry the inner security and power in his final journey towards defeating Lord Voldemort. Little Whinging and Number 4, Privet Drive might had given Harry painful memories but it served as his protection, the protection of love from his mother, from evil forces in his seventeen years. Number 12, Grimmauld Place gave Harry the hope and happiness that at last, he has a family through his godfather Sirius Black. From these all, we can see that all of them contributed to Harry’s character, attitude and personality. With these overall positive and happy places, together with his choices and decisions, he emerged a hero.
On the other hand, Tom Riddle left many horrible memories and actions on the places on his list. In most of these places occurred a murder that became his horcruxes. In the end, these places, or some of them, became the hiding places of his horcruxes, thinking that no one would know him enough to discover these places. After all, as Albus Dumbledore said, ‘It has known magic.’ Somehow, the magic was retained in the place; however you want to hide it.
This just shows the intricate relationship magic and a place can have. With these contrasting personal places of the two characters, we can see how a place and its magic can affect one’s life and his or her magical capabilities.
Hope you enjoy this class! Take care, everyone! XD
